History

In 1953, a fire destroyed the third floor of Belleville High School. The blaze began in a basement store room and swept to the second and third floors via a nearby ventilating shaft. No one was injured, but the second and third floors were damaged beyond use for the rest of the school year. The third floor has remained closed, class continues today on the first and second stories.[1]

Construction goes on for the new Belleville High School just east of the building. Classes still go on. The new building will be done Summer 2012.

School Song

Other schools have always cheered for,
Their colors and the rest;
When they meet the mighty Belleville
We will show them why we're the best!
Rah! Rah!
We will back our fighting Tigers,
And no honor shall they lack;
As they win for Belleville High Schoo l .
And the orange and the black![2]

I graduated from Belleville High School in 1968 and know the School Song as:

Although Yale has always favored
The violets dark blue,
And the many sons of Harvard,
to the crimson rose are true.
We will hold our lilies forward,
No honor shall we lack,
For the Tigers are defenders
of the Orange and the Black!

AYP

As of December 2010, the Belleville High School has made Adequate Yearly Process for the second year in a row.

Tiger Respect Code

In 1996 the student body wrote a document entitled the "Tiger Respect Code." This document has since been included in every version of the annual student handbook since. The code reads as follows:[3]

We the students of Belleville High School entreat ourselves to always show respect and equality towards others. In the process, this will establish a safe and enjoyable learning environment, with freedom for appropriate growth as individuals. This ultimately will prepare us for the future.

We should…

  • Believe in ourselves and others
  • Be open minded, non-judgmental, and accepting of others' differences.
  • Be courteous, supportive, and helpful to others.
  • Follow through on commitments.
  • Treat others as we want to be treated.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Honor other people's rights to property and privacy.
  • Use appropriate language and communication skills.

Marching Tigers

Belleville High School Marching Tigers was the third largest high school marching band in the state of Michigan, with 242 members for the 2009-2010 school year.

WBHS Channel 19

In 2000 Comcast, at the request of teacher, Steve Wilson and the Van Buren Public School Board set the school up with an educational access station which would come to be called WBHS Channel 19. The station is almost entirely run by students taking the year long "Channel 19" course with only the aid of one instructor and the occasional alumni volunteer. The station broadcasts the daily produced morning announcements, student projects, Semi-annual live telethons and other events from around the area which are either taped by the high school's T.E.C. Club or submitted by parents & staff. The logo and slogan for the station were created by Brandon Mullins, class of 2003. The station its self is shown on channel 19 as well as HD channel 902 in Comcast’s Van Buren Township Corp, 9502.[4]
